Frankly I have no real memories of my early years, it all started when I found myself sitting on a conveyor belt with Timmy next to me. Everything seems to be exceptionally vague, until the time we were all loaded into a rather large crate. There was not much light and I could not see Timmy anywhere, so I was rather worried until an Old English Sheepdog came along and told me my nephew was fine and with a group of Bears his own size. Woof was a great dog, a bit big and very fluffy, she and her friends knew how to organise things, and soon had us Big Bears looking after groups of the younger ones.
Soon we realised that we were moving, there had been a lot of banging and crashing, followed by a thump which made all the smaller bears bounce into the air. Luckily we managed to catch them on the way down, naturally they thought it good fun. Around us the noise went on for some time, then it fell silent and after a while we felt a sort of motion under the crate and there was the sound of water splashing. One occasion we all became really scared. The crate was going up and down, rocking side to side, just as if it was completely out of control. Several horrendous bangs were heard from above, and through the small crack between the doors, we saw bright flashes. Many of the Little Bears started crying, so we all clung together in a big hug. Time went very slowly, it seemed a long, long time before we felt a great jolt and sensation of the crate being lifted, then a thud followed by the sound of chains. An engine started and we all fell forward as again we started to move. This time however we could hear many other noises outside, traffic moving, people shouting and horns hooting. A short time later we came to a halt, we all seemed to be aware that this was the end of our long journey. The crate doors were pulled open, and because we had no other alternative we all fell out, pushing over the two people standing there. Within seconds they were in the middle of a large pile of Teddy Bears and Cuddly Dogs of all different sizes and colours. Everyone saw the funny side of this and fell about laughing, which was a good start to our stay in The Warehouse. Finally we were loaded into trolleys and taken inside a massive building, where we were placed onto shelves. Timmy managed to manoeuvre his way along and settled down beside me, he was trying hard to be a brave Bear, but I knew he was wondering what was going to happen next. In fact, nothing did, for quite some time. The Warehouse was closed down at night, only a couple of security guards on duty, they walked round the place at regular intervals. Next morning several people came and looked at us, talked a lot then looked some more. A number of Bears and Cuddly Dogs were taken away to be photographed, returned showing off because their pictures were going into a brochure. This is also why I look nothing like the picture Timmy saw recently, obviously the same one had been used. Woof suggested the next evening we went for a look round, so as soon as the guards had gone by the two of us jumped from the shelf and started our tour. Everything possible seemed to be in that building, from nice comfortable looking chairs to boxes of chocolates and loads of biscuits. Many more toys, and games than was possible to believe! Reporting back to the other Teddy Bears and Cuddly Dogs caused havoc, as they all wanted to go and look for themselves. Woof said we should find out more about the place first, so for the next few days and nights we spied and listened as much as possible. The guards did their rounds then watched television in their office, it was not hard to learn their routine.
Bear parties and Cuddly Dog evenings nearly every night from then on, someone was always organising something. Amazingly the guards never saw us, of course it was all part of the fun avoiding them. The nights started to get longer, and the warehouse much colder, resulting in us staying closer together to keep warm. Woof was very good and organising things and soon had warm blankets, boxes of chocolates and other goodies moved onto near by shelves, close enough for us to reach in the evenings. We woke one morning to find a great deal of activity going on, trolley’s had been brought close to our part of the warehouse, onto which some of us were loaded and taken on a short journey out through mysterious large doors. Here we found another large area, not unlike The Warehouse, but this time bright and lively with people coming and going. Carefully we were placed onto another shelf, and I was pleased to see Timmy and Woof were also there. During the day people were always walking around, many stopped to look at us. A number of Bears and Cuddly Dogs were taken off the shelf and never returned. Initially we were very worried about this, but then Woof over heard a conversation with a little girl and her mother. The mother was telling her daughter she would have to wait and see what Father Christmas would bring her as a present. The little girl had been looking at one of the Bears with a gleam in her eye. As her mother led her daughter away, distracting the little girl to look at something different, her dad came along took down the Bear and went off with him. Later, when all was quiet, Woof set off to find out who Father Christmas was, and returned with a wonderful story to tell! This started a great deal of talk about where we might end up at Christmas, and would we go to good loving homes. As it happened Timmy was to go shortly afterwards. This nice man looked at us and without hesitation picked up Timmy gave him a cuddly and placed him in his shopping cart. I knew there wasn’t any need to worry about his future and somehow it wasn’t the last I would see of Timmy. Somehow Woof and me got pushed to the back of the shelf, probably when more Bears and Cuddly Dogs were brought out from the warehouse. Christmas was fast approaching and we heard someone say we would be put back in The Warehouse soon as they were going to get ready for a sale. We were, on Christmas Eve, a very reduced number of Bears and Cuddly Toys. Oh what a Christmas we had, but that, as they say, is another story!
